Where to Eat Around 8th and Vermont in Koreatown

We have been on West 8th Street long enough to have opinions about the block. Most Koreatown guides send people to the same handful of big restaurants on Wilshire and Western. This one covers what is actually within walking distance of our door at 3064 West 8th Street, plus a few spots a short drive away that are worth the trip.

Every place below is somewhere we send customers when they ask. None of them paid to be here.

On our block

That's What She Said (TWSS Cafe) — 3076 W 8th St

Our closest neighbor, about thirty seconds on foot. A small covered patio with low tables, drinks that lean toward the creative end, and — the important part — it stays open until 10 PM most nights and 11 PM on Fridays and Saturdays. Late coffee is genuinely hard to find on this stretch. Come here after we close.

Izal Caffe — 3160 W 8th St

Two blocks west and open at 6:45 AM, which makes it the earliest option nearby by a wide margin. Breakfast toasts, careful latte art, and a matcha lavender latte that regulars talk about. Rated 4.9 across nearly a hundred Google reviews, which is unusually high for any restaurant. Closes at 4 PM, so this is a morning place.

JoongHwaRu — 3122 W 8th St

Korean-Chinese, tucked into a small plaza, and the jajangmyeon is the reason to go. Black bean noodles, crispy pork, and portions large enough that two people can split a combo and take food home. If you have never had Korean-Chinese food, this is a good introduction. Closed Wednesdays.

Kingyubu — 3128 W 8th St

Also on our block. Worth a look if you want something more substantial than what we serve.

A short walk up Vermont

Alchemist Coffee Project — 698 S Vermont Ave, Ste 103

A ten-minute walk north. Specialty coffee in a plaza with actual parking, which counts for a lot in this neighborhood. Open until 8 PM daily. The misugaru latte is the thing to order if you want something you cannot get elsewhere. Good for working — the music stays at a reasonable volume.

7th Korean BBQ — 698 S Vermont Ave

All-you-can-eat Korean barbecue, 4.6 stars over 460 reviews. The owner's family sources the meat directly, and the beef tongue is their specialty. Open 11 AM to 11:30 PM every day, so it works for a late lunch or a late dinner.

J BBQ — 901 Vermont Ave

The higher-volume option, with nearly 1,800 reviews at 4.6 stars. Open from noon, until 11 PM on weekdays and 11 PM on weekends. Reliable rather than surprising, which is exactly what you want when you are feeding a group that cannot agree on anything.

Further west on 8th

Pigya — 3400 W 8th St

Korean barbecue where the staff grills for you at the table. If you have been to a place where you burned your own short rib and regretted it, this solves that. Opens at 5 PM on weekdays, noon on Saturdays.

JJAN Korean Gastropub — 3328 W 8th St

Open until 2 AM every night. Pork belly with green onion, frozen beer, and the kind of atmosphere that makes a Tuesday feel like a weekend. There is parking in the back, which is rare enough to mention.

For groceries

Galleria Market — 440 Vermont Ave

The closest full Korean supermarket, about a mile north. Strong banchan counter, produce sales Thursday through Sunday, and plenty of parking. Open 7:30 AM to 9:45 PM.

California Market — 450 S Western Ave

Free parking, which is the headline. There is a kimbap counter inside that regulars swear by, and it is open until midnight — useful when you realize at 10 PM that you need something for tomorrow.

H Mart K-Town — 928 S Western Ave

The most organized of the three, with a food hall attached. Best if you want to shop and eat in one stop.

A short drive

Hae Jang Chon — 3821 W 6th St

Probably the best-known all-you-can-eat Korean barbecue in the neighborhood, with 3,490 reviews at 4.5 stars. Open until midnight most nights and 2 AM on weekends. Closed Tuesdays. Expect a wait on Friday and Saturday, though it moves faster than the line suggests.

Where we fit

We are at 3064 West 8th Street, open 9:30 AM to 7 PM Monday through Thursday, until 8 PM Friday and Saturday, and until 6 PM Sunday. Mochi donuts are $3.75 each and $33 for a dozen, Korean corn dogs start at $4.50, and we also make tteokbokki, Dubai chewy cookies, coffee, and milk teas.

Most people come to us before or after one of the places above. That is the right way to use us. If you are heading to Korean barbecue at 7 PM, grab a corn dog at 5 to hold you over. If you are leaving Hae Jang Chon at 11, we are unfortunately closed — go to TWSS next door instead.
